Paphos to Blue Lagoon: One of Cyprus's Best Yacht Routes
The journey from Paphos to the Blue Lagoon on the Akamas Peninsula is one of the most scenic and rewarding yacht routes in Cyprus. Combining dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden coves, the legendary Baths of Aphrodite, and the impossibly turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon itself, this trip delivers everything the Mediterranean is famous for — and then some.
While Latchi is the closest departure point to the Blue Lagoon (just 20–30 minutes away), many visitors are based in Paphos and prefer to depart from Paphos Harbour. The slightly longer journey is actually a bonus — the coastline between Paphos and the Akamas is spectacular, and the extra sailing time means more coastal scenery, more swimming stops, and a grander sense of adventure.
Route Overview
The Direct Route (45–60 minutes)
Distance: Approximately 18–20 nautical miles
The most straightforward path follows the coastline north-west from Paphos Harbour, passing Coral Bay, the sea caves near Pegeia, and the Akamas cliffs before reaching the Blue Lagoon. On a motor yacht cruising at 18–22 knots, you'll arrive in about 45 minutes. Slower vessels (sailing yachts, some catamarans) take 60–90 minutes.
The Scenic Route (2–3 hours with stops)
We recommend this approach for full-day charters. Instead of racing to the Blue Lagoon, take the scenic route with multiple stops along the way:
Stop 1: Coral Bay (15 minutes from Paphos)
The first noteworthy spot north of Paphos. Coral Bay is a wide, sandy beach with warm, shallow water — perfect for a quick morning swim to start the day. The bay is sheltered and calm, making it an ideal first anchorage, especially for groups with children.
Stop 2: Sea Caves at Pegeia (25 minutes from Paphos)
Just beyond Coral Bay, the coastline turns rugged. Limestone cliffs plunge into the sea, and a series of sea caves and natural arches appear. These are less famous than the Ayia Napa sea caves but equally impressive — and far less crowded. Kayaking or swimming into the caves here is magical.
Stop 3: Agios Georgios Peninsula (35 minutes from Paphos)
A small fishing harbour overlooked by a whitewashed church. The coast here is dramatic, with rocky islets just offshore that create fascinating channels to navigate through. The fishing tavernas ashore are some of the best in the region — but you'll visit those on the return journey.
Stop 4: The Akamas Cliffs (40–50 minutes from Paphos)
As you round the north-western tip of the Akamas Peninsula, the landscape becomes truly wild. Towering cliffs, no roads, no buildings — just raw Cypriot nature. Keep an eye out for Mediterranean monk seals (extremely rare but occasionally spotted) and sea turtles, which are common in Akamas waters from May to October.
Stop 5: Baths of Aphrodite (50–55 minutes from Paphos)
Just before the Blue Lagoon, you'll pass the cove below the famous Baths of Aphrodite — the freshwater pool where mythology says the goddess of love bathed. While you can't access the baths from the sea (they're up a shaded path), the cove itself is a lovely anchorage, and the story adds a layer of romance to the journey.
Arrival: Blue Lagoon (55–65 minutes from Paphos)
And then — there it is. The water shifts from deep blue to an almost unbelievable turquoise as you enter the Blue Lagoon. Drop anchor, dive in, and savour the moment.
Costs by Vessel Type
Self-Drive Boat
Self-drive boats are available from Paphos Harbour, but note that the trip to the Blue Lagoon is longer and more exposed than from Latchi. Only attempt this on calm days (Beaufort 3 or below), and ensure your boat has sufficient fuel range.
- Full day: €300–€600
- Fuel surcharge: €50–€100 extra for the distance
- Best for: Experienced self-drivers, couples, budget-conscious adventurers
Crewed Motor Yacht
The most popular choice for the Paphos to Blue Lagoon route. A professional captain handles the navigation (including assessing sea conditions for the Akamas stretch), while you relax on the sundeck.
- Half-day (Blue Lagoon direct, 4–5 hours): €1,200–€3,000
- Full day (scenic route with stops, 7–8 hours): €2,000–€5,500
- Best for: Groups of 6–15 wanting a premium experience
Catamaran
Excellent for this route — the wide, stable platform handles any chop comfortably, and the spacious decks give everyone room to spread out during the longer journey. Catamarans draw less water, so they can anchor closer to shore at the Blue Lagoon.
- Full day: €2,500–€6,000
- Best for: Families, larger groups (10–20), anyone who values comfort and space
Luxury Yacht (50+ ft)
For a truly memorable experience. Large luxury yachts often carry full water toy arsenals (jet skis, paddleboards, snorkelling gear), have an onboard chef, and offer supreme comfort for the journey.
- Full day: €5,000–€12,000
- Best for: Special celebrations, corporate groups, honeymoon trips
What's Included vs. Extra
Typically included:
- Captain and crew
- Fuel for the round trip
- Snorkelling equipment
- Basic refreshments (water, soft drinks on many charters)
- Swimming towels (on larger yachts)
Typically extra:
- Catered lunch: €15–€40 per person
- Premium drinks package: €20–€40 per person
- Water toys (jet ski hire): €80–€150 per hour
- Professional photography: €200–€400
- Crew gratuity: 10–15% (customary)
Best Time for the Paphos–Blue Lagoon Route
Time of Year
The route is operational from April through October. Prime months are May, June, September, and October — warm enough for comfortable swimming, calm enough for smaller vessels, and less crowded at the lagoon itself. July and August are peak season: fantastic weather but expect company at the Blue Lagoon midday.
Time of Day
We strongly recommend a morning departure (8:30–9:30am) for full-day charters. This gets you to the Blue Lagoon by mid-morning, well before the tour boats from Latchi arrive around 11am. You'll have 1–2 hours of relative tranquility before the crowd builds.
For half-day charters, an afternoon departure (1–2pm) works beautifully. You arrive at the lagoon as the tour boats are leaving, enjoy a sunset swim in near-empty waters, and cruise back in golden evening light.
Essential Tips for the Trip
- Check sea conditions. The stretch between Agios Georgios and the Akamas is exposed to westerly winds. If conditions look rough, your captain may suggest an alternative route or destination. Trust their judgment — safety always comes first.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The Akamas Peninsula is a protected nature reserve. Standard sunscreen chemicals damage the fragile ecosystem.
- Pack aqua shoes. The Blue Lagoon seabed is rocky in places. Aqua shoes make wading and swimming much more comfortable.
- Bring a camera with decent zoom. The Akamas cliffs are photogenic from the water, and you'll spot wildlife (sea turtles, hawks, wild goats on the cliffs) at a distance.
- Don't skip Coral Bay. On the return trip, stopping at Coral Bay for a final swim as the afternoon cools down is a perfect way to end the day.
- Consider combining routes. If you have the time and budget, a full-day loop from Paphos that includes the Blue Lagoon and then continues to Latchi for a dockside seafood lunch before returning is our favourite all-day itinerary.
Alternative: Blue Lagoon from Latchi
If you're flexible on departure point, consider basing your trip from Latchi harbour. It's a 30-minute drive from Paphos, and the boat journey to the Blue Lagoon is just 20–30 minutes — half the distance and fuel. This is especially worth considering if you're renting a self-drive boat, as the shorter crossing is more suitable for smaller vessels. Latchi also has excellent waterfront fish restaurants for post-swim lunch.
